This stunning American flag cake is not only a feast for the eyes but also a delicious treat that celebrates patriotism. Perfect for any celebration, it’s layered with fluffy vanilla cake, fresh berries, and whipped cream to create a festive dessert.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 large eggs
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)
  • 1 pint blueberries
  • 2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • Optional: edible glitter for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the three prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  8. To assemble the cake, place one layer on a serving platter and spread a layer of whipped cream over the top. Add a layer of sliced strawberries and blueberries.
  9. Add the second layer of cake and repeat the process with whipped cream and berries.
  10. Place the third layer of cake on top and spread whipped cream over the entire cake.
  11. Using the blueberries and strawberries, create an American flag design on top of the cake – blueberries for the stars and strawberries for the stripes.
  12. Optional: Sprinkle edible glitter on top for a festive touch.
  13. Slice and serve, celebrating with this perfect patriotic dessert!

Notes

  • For a more colorful flag, consider using raspberries along with strawberries.
  • You can make the cakes a day ahead and assemble them the day of serving for best results.
