Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup milk
- 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 5 large eggs
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)
- 1 pint blueberries
- 2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced
- Optional: edible glitter for decoration
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly among the three prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Once cooled, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
- To assemble the cake, place one layer on a serving platter and spread a layer of whipped cream over the top. Add a layer of sliced strawberries and blueberries.
- Add the second layer of cake and repeat the process with whipped cream and berries.
- Place the third layer of cake on top and spread whipped cream over the entire cake.
- Using the blueberries and strawberries, create an American flag design on top of the cake – blueberries for the stars and strawberries for the stripes.
- Optional: Sprinkle edible glitter on top for a festive touch.
- Slice and serve, celebrating with this perfect patriotic dessert!
Notes
- For a more colorful flag, consider using raspberries along with strawberries.
- You can make the cakes a day ahead and assemble them the day of serving for best results.
- Keep the cake refrigerated if not serving immediately.
