Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the warmed milk, melted butter, and eggs until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. While the dough is rising, prepare the poppy seed filling by combining the poppy seeds, honey, and vanilla extract in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until well mixed and set aside to cool.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Spread the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  9. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams to seal.
  10. Place the rolled dough seam-side down in a greased baking dish. Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Bake the cake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  13. Let cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar before serving if desired.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh poppy seeds.
  • This cake can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
