- 6 pieces Herring fillets
- 1 medium Onion
- 1 cup Vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup White vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Black peppercorns
- 2 pieces Bay leaves
- to taste Salt
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the sliced onion with a pinch of salt and let it sit for about 10 minutes to draw out moisture.
- In a separate pot, combine the vegetable oil, white vinegar, black peppercorns, and bay leaves. Heat gently on low to infuse the flavors, but do not boil.
- Once the oil mixture is warm, remove it from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
- In a glass jar or container, layer the herring fillets and the salted onions. Pour the infused oil mixture over the top, ensuring the herring is fully submerged.
- Seal the jar or container tightly and refrigerate for at least 24 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve chilled as an appetizer or with bread.
