Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 hot dogs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Wooden skewers or popsicle sticks

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix milk and egg until combined. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  3. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Insert a wooden skewer into each hot dog, leaving enough stick for handling.
  5. Dip each hot dog into the cornmeal batter, making sure it’s fully coated.
  6. Carefully place the coated hot dogs into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  7. Fry for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally.
  8. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with mustard or ketchup.

Notes

  • Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure a crispy coating.
  • You can add spices to the batter for extra flavor.
  • Serve with your favorite dipping sauces!
