Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices of American cheese
- Lettuce, tomato, and onion for toppings
- Condiments of choice (ketchup, mustard, mayo)
Instructions
- Preheat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions (about 4 oz each) and gently form them into loose balls. Do not overwork the meat.
- Once the skillet is hot, add the beef balls to the skillet, leaving space between each. Use a large spatula to smash each ball down into a flat patty.
- Season the patties generously with salt and pepper.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes until a crust forms on the bottom, then flip the patties.
- Add a slice of cheese on top of each patty and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and let them rest.
- Toast the hamburger buns in the skillet until golden brown.
- Assemble the burgers by placing each patty on a bun and adding your desired toppings and condiments.
Notes
- For the best flavor, use freshly ground beef and avoid overhandling the meat.
- Feel free to customize your toppings to your liking; other great options include pickles, bacon, or barbecue sauce.
