Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 package of refrigerated pie crusts or homemade pie crust
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well to coat the apples evenly.
  4. Roll out the pie crust if using homemade dough. Place one crust in a 9-inch pie dish.
  5. Fill the crust with the apple mixture, making sure to distribute it evenly.
  6. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter.
  7. Cover the pie with the second crust, sealing the edges by crimping them together. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  8. If desired, brush the top crust with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool before serving. Enjoy your classic apple pie with vanilla ice cream!

Notes

  • You can use a variety of apples for a more complex flavor.
  • If the edges of the pie crust brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature, and it pairs well with whipped cream or ice cream.
