- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring frequently to avoid burning.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the chopped basil and balsamic vinegar if using. Stir to combine and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving or storing.
Notes
- This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- To freeze, let the sauce cool completely, then store it in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
